Joseph Wright Hall hosts next Barton Civic Society talk
In this talk, The Teacher is Abroad in the Land, Ian Wolsley explores the travels, trials and tribulations of this itinerant promoter of Infant education, Samuel Wilderspin, one of the founding fathers of modern schooling.
After many years spent travelling and promoting infant schooling throughout by road and sea just as the railway age dawned through Britain and Ireland , Wilderspin moved to Barton and created his own model Infant School at Queen Street. He was the first superintendent of the Infant School, and taught here with his wife and daughter, as well as training teachers and nursery governesses, and using it as a base for his promotion of enlightened education throughout Britain.
The talk is part of Barton Civic Society’s 2021 lecture programme, and will take place in the Joseph Wright Hall (ground floor) at 7.3opm on Friday, October 15. Non members £2. Doors open 7.00pm.
