Heritage Open Days 2018 is back in Barton upon Humber from Thursday September 6 to Sunday September 16 with 90 events on offer and 18 historic venues to explore in 11 days around the town.

From a tour of a public air raid shelter installed during World War II, to an energetic Victorian variety show at Joseph Wright Hall, there is so much on offer for all the family to get involved.  The theme for 2018 is “Picturing the Past”, where venues will open their doors to showcase their connection to Barton upon Humber’s fascinating history.

One highlight for this year is an exclusive tour of the Humber Bridge.  At 37 years of age, the Grade I-listed Humber Bridge is an iconic landmark across the globe.  Many cross it by road and foot every day, but few people have witnessed the spectacular views from the top of the Bridge towers or the amazing sights beneath the bridge deck and in the anchorage.

For the first time during Heritage Open Days, visitors can take part in an exclusive “above” or “below” tour.  The “above” tour involves an opportunity to witness the spectacular views of our region from the top of the Humber Bridge, whereas the “below” tour will take visitors deep into the belly of the structure, walking inside the road deck and down into the anchorage in an experience that will be like walking onto a film set.

In all there are 90 events taking place in Barton over the period of Heritage Open Days with more taking place all over the county celebrating its rich heritage through the medium of art, photography, design and more.

The town’s contribution to the event was made by possible by the Heritage Lottery Fund that enabled The Ropewalk to work in partnership with the Wilderspin School Museum to develop the Barton’s Heritage Open Days.
