As part of our continuing celebration of Hull City of Culture 2017, Kirsten Simister tells the story of the city’s Ferens Art Gallery from her perspective as Curator. The Art Gallery opened in 1927, founded by Thomas Ferens, who was MP for Hull East for thirteen years. The permanent collection of paintings and sculpture spans artistic periods from medieval times to the present day. The newly refurbished Ferens will host the 2017 Turner Prize, one of the biggest events in British art, as part of UK City of Culture, and there is a major new exhibition unveiling for the first time Pietro Lorenzetti’s stunning panel painting, Christ between Saints Paul and Peter (c.1320), following its recent acquisition and conservation.

The talk takes place at the Joseph Wright Halls, Queen Street at 7.30pm. For up to date information visit:

Admission for Civic Society members is free. Non-members £2.
