Beryl – A Yorkshire Woman’s Cycle Through Life @ Assembly Rooms

Maxine Peake’s witty, charming and critically acclaimed play celebrating the life of unsung sporting legend Beryl Burton comes to Barton’s Assembly Rooms.

Beryl Burton, MBE, OBE, wife and mother as well as five times World Pursuit Champion, 13 times National Pursuit Champion and twice World Road-Race Champion was one of the most astonishing sports people ever.

When Beryl Charnock met keen cyclist Charlie Burton she was smitten, not only with Charlie but with the thrill and freedom she found on her bike. She would out-work the men in the rhubarb fields, she could out-class the cyclists on the road and still find time to knit young Denise a cycling jumper!

A West Yorkshire Playhouse Production, Peake’s play has been described as “an affectionate sprint through her life” presenting Burton as true Yorkshire grit.

Tickets cost £8 or £7 concessions and can be purchased from Lindsey Relay on George Street Barton or by telephoning 01652 633951.

Doors open at 7pm and the performance starts at 7.30pm.
